Performing well under pressure is influenced by relationships; how one relates to oneself, to others, and to the stressors and challenges one faces. Over the last 15 years I (Guy) have worked in elite sport helping teams and individuals perform under pressure through building awareness of athletes’ and coaches’ relationships with themselves through understanding their strengths and untapped skills, with others by facilitating high quality relationships that help teams thrive, and with pressure by equipping them with psychological skills to relate better to stress and pressure. I’ve taken these skills into a range of performance domains such as business, medicine, and military to help individuals and teams perform well when the pressure is on.

Why Spotlight?

One of the tools I use to help grow these relationships is Spotlight. Spotlight is a contemporary personality profiling tool that was born out of elite sport. Spotlight challenges personality typing with adaptability. Instead of focusing on rigid characteristics, Spotlight helps people shift their thinking and actions when the context or situation requires change. Also, Spotlight has been rigorously validated, unlike some other personality assessments available and used today.

The Spotlight profile provides a comprehensive insight into a range of personal performance factors. It helps with understanding strengths, how you may respond under pressure, and how you can adapt and adjust to maintain performance, as well as some suggestions on how to fulfill your potential in a team environment.

How does it work?

Spotlight can be used with both team and individuals. From my experience delivering Spotlight in teams, a combination of 1-2-1 coaching and team sessions provides a useful opportunity to understand individual profiles, digest the framework underpinning the profile, to apply and adapting thinking and acting effectively and develop awareness of team’s strengths and blindspots in thinking, to be able to make better decisions, and perform effectively. From working with individuals, Spotlight can be used in the context of performance coaching - helping supercharge sessions to harness strengths, excel under pressure, master problem-solving, cultivate relationships, and increase influence.

FAQ:

I want to use spotlight with my team, what’s the process?

After you’ve sent an enquiry, we will discuss your needs to tailor your Spotlight journey. All team members will need to complete the online questionnaire (takes about 10 minutes) to generate the personal Spotlight profile, then the next step on your Spotlight journey can either be 1-2-1 coaching sessions debriefing the profile or an interactive team session. The coaching sessions are used to debrief and explore the profile as a tool to harness strengths, excel under pressure, master problem-solving, cultivate relationships, and increase influence. An initial 90 minute coaching session can be used to debrief the questionnaire and ignite potential towards using the Spotlight tool. A series of coaching sessions can help embed the Spotlight principles into high performance practice. Tailored coaching packages can be developed for your performance needs.

An initial ‘ignite’ team session (2-6 hours) can be a one-off session or can be the first in a series of several team sessions. An initial team session can spark connections through strength based feedback, conversations about character, peer to peer coaching as well as explorations of the Spotlight frameworks and profiles. Participants leave an initial team session with an understanding of theirs and others’ strengths, insights into team preferences, and with clear micro-action-plans to implement mindset and behaviour change to help performance and decision making under Pressure. The initial session can be followed by Spotlight ‘pulse check’ sessions (90 min to 3 hours), in which the team can revisit spotlight frameworks, continue evaluations of mindset and behaviour shifts, reflection on effectiveness of adaptations, and are opportunities to work through current performance issues using the Spotlight framework.
